BANYAN TREE

BLUEWATERS ISLAND

Demon Duck by Chef Alvin Leung is one of those places that’s impressive any night of the week and when I saw it featured in Dubai Restaurant Week, I didn’t hesitate to book - and it didn’t disappoint.

STARTERS

The meal started strong with Chef Alvin’s signature crispy duck hummus, a dish I’ve loved before - it’s beautiful hummus but with bits of crispy duck on top that hit! The bang bang chicken, served in an ultra-light batter with a soy-based sauce, was part tangy part spicy - delish. And the beetroot and crushed cucumber salads are a light ease-in.

MAINS

The sweet and sour chicken was swoon-worthy but it was the 48-hour short ribs that was the showstopper: fall-apart tender, rich in flavour, and surprisingly not overwhelming. Vegetarians will be pleased with options like the Sichuan chilli cauliflower and the roasted eggplant in sweet miso and every main comes with Chef Alvin’s signature egg fried rice - there’s great wok char on this.

DESSERT

To finish, the raspberry sorbet was bright, tart, and just so light but it did the trick. For something a bit richer, the custard tart with lemon and nutmeg crème fraîche is good, and for matcha lovers, you can choose the chocolate and matcha fondant.

DRINKS

The cocktail menu is just as exciting. The Southside fizz is a standout - Tanqueray gin, lemon juice, mint, syrup, and soda water come together for a crisp zingy refresher and the elixir of life felt very Chinese, blending vodka, tropical lychee, and mint, topped with sparkling wine - a very good drink.
