Sarabeth’s New York Bakery & Restaurant has thrown open its doors on the sunny waterfront by Hidd Marina on Saadiyat Island, fulfilling a 44 year dream of founder Sarabeth Levine to have a restaurant on the beach.
A multi-award winning restaurateur, artisanal baker and jam maker extraordinaire, Sarabeth got her start in her New York City apartment alongside her late husband Bill in the early 80s, and hasn’t looked back since. The upside? We can now enjoy her signature dishes and warm hospitality right by the beach in Abu Dhabi.

Walking in, the chic interiors transport you to New York - complete with clean finishes and upscale touches - but it’s ultimately welcoming with a warm energy and smiling, attentive staff. Take a seat outside on the palm lined esplanade while the weather allows, or retreat inside to airconditioned comfort: the big windows and airy space retain the waterfront charm.

As the author of two popular cookbooks, you can count on Sarabeth’s menu being a winner. All day dining - serving up breakfast from 7AM and feeding patrons until 10PM daily - means there is plenty to choose from. We went for some breakfast classics: classic waffles and the intriguing green and white popover. Crunchy, warm and fresh from the iron, the waffles scratched the ‘sweet’ itch, and the serving was generous, topped with syrup and berries.

The popover had us intrigued: flicking through Sarabeth’s cookbook while we waited, we could see it’s essentially a Yorkshire pudding, but far from its typical Sunday roast context. Landing on the table, the light and crispy popover was filled with scrambled eggs, perfectly cooked and very moreish. Definitely give this one a try if you’re a fan of a traditional Yorkie - it’s a delish dish!

What's with the jams? Sarabeth began making her orange marmalade from a family recipe with the opening of her first cafe in New York, and customers desperately wanted to know where they could buy it - she says this was the accidental start of her jam and preserve empire. 44 years later, amassing a collection of 19 restaurants, a bakery and jam facility along the way, Sarabeth has expanded her Middle East audience once again. Joining Sarabeth’s City Walk in Dubai, she’s been hands-on in the unveiling of the Saadiyat Island restaurant, and last week flew to Qatar for an opening there as well.
We’re more than happy Sarabeth has brought her signature charm to Saadiyat Island: from a relaxed breakfast to a long lunch or casual dinner with friends, this is one we’ll be returning to again and again.
