CUSTOM CAKES FROM THE LOBBY LOUNGE

Last weekend, we were celebrating a very good friend with three occasions in one night – her birthday, graduation from her very tough Masters, AND her new job. It was important that we made the night special, and we wanted to show her just how much she means to us. We wanted something that was unique and special but not too birthday cakey and, as her favourite bird is a flamingo, we decided to incorporate that in the cake. We had a look online for inspiration before ordering and we did think, ‘eek, this could go horribly wrong…’– those cakes look HARD, but we went with it anyway. When I placed the order, I just asked for ‘something with flamingos’ and the Chef could do what he liked. I prefer doing this when ordering cakes as it gives the Chef some space to get creative and do some of their best work!

When we went to collect it from the lobby cafe, we spotted it straight away - just like our friend, it was flocking FABULOUS! The details on the flamingo were just incredible – each sugar feather layered piece by piece to create what would be described as nothing short of an art! The painting on the flamingo’s was so intricate and precise, it really looked like the flamingo was looking at us. The flamingo itself was so tall, they had to glue together two plastic boxes for us to take it away

With the flamingo front and centre, the rest of the cake didn't need too much more but the detail didn’t stop there. The delicate edible pink sugar roses that adorned the cake were simple stunning and the simple white icing with silver sugar balls gave space for the flamingo and roses to really stand out.

There were a number of cake flavours to choose from (https://qrco.de/bc4YQ7) and if it was for me, I would have definitely picked the funfetti cheesecake but our friend LOVES chocolate so we chose the Cacao Bongo option – a rich chocolate cake with layers of dark chocolate ganache. The cake was not too sweet, my friends described it with the M word, and the crunchy bites of hazelnut added surprise texture to the slice. It went down a treat with everyone!
