UDON FOR BAO AND RAMEN!

UDN is actually literally a hidden gem! Despite being in a really good location, you kind of miss it behind the trees as you come off the big roundabout near Carrefour. But there it is and it’s very funky!

Decor is industrial Japanese: lots of sleek stone tables, polished concrete floor, the odd neon sign and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs working noodle magic.

And the food. Well …

We started with the extra pillowy house-made bao, biting into beef and crunching down on coriander and cucumber - a totally refreshing combination.

The crab salad was a great healthy choice: shredded crab mixed with fresh cabbage, cucumber and carrot and a tangy sauce.

But far and away the stars of the show, and I suspect what brings the boys to the yard, were the noodle dishes …

The traditional wakame udon was delicious. Watch your noodles being made, then cooked and brought to your table - it doesn’t get fresher than that! Immersed in dashi broth alongside the fattest tempura prawns, wakame (seaweed) and fish cakes, this is a dish that can feed you for a whole day and is entirely satisfying.

We absolutely loved the house special, the chicken katsu curry. This really got our tastebuds tingling and the juices flowing. The curry sauce was superb and the chicken freshly prepared in breadcrumbs, fried and sliced. Once again, the noodles were hard to stop eating - these are glorious.

UDN also does a good line in sushi, has a kids menu and some good mochi for dessert.
