WEEKEND ROAST BARGAIN

Lock, Stock and Barrel Sunday Roast

My mum was a fantastic cook and it was all very second-nature to her to whip up a roast dinner, with meat usually bought from a local farm. They were amazing because she had cooking meat down to a fine art, with vegetables to match and was always the gravy queen. All the roasts I eat now, I compare to hers and it's so good when one comes close. Would Lock Stock and Barrel's be the one?

We rocked up to Lock Stock on Sunday afternoon (no kids, it's adults only) and what greeted us was a very funky space near the end of the pier at Yas Bay, water views, edgy music and a chef who knows what he's doing, roast-wise.

As part of the roast, you order two kinds of meat (lamb, chicken or beef) plus vegetables, stuffing, Yorkshire's, sauces (mint, and hollandaise) and gravy plus a house beverage for AED120. Worth it? Totally! There were a few unexpected 'wow' moments: the chicken was sublime but we both chose the lamb as the number one meat, the red cabbage with a beautiful brown sugar balsamic glaze, the in-CREDIBLE cauliflower cheese and the stuffing balls - spongy, herby and delicious. Potatoes (three huge!) were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and Yorkshire's were massive (one of us ate 3 ... *cough* husband!) and the gravy we poured into them dark and smooth. They offered us extra gravy but we didn't really need it, as well as a good mint sauce for the lamb, which we slathered on. The portion size was good - I couldn't finish mine.

As always, despite being desperately full, I was enticed by the dessert menu which has a few pure quality offerings and we decided on the sticky toffee pudding and the apple crumble. Both were good with the sticky toffee coming out on top - possibly we would've preferred ice-cream on the crumble as opposed to creme fraiche, but I'd still order it again. This wasn't part of the roast deal but I always think, if you're doing it, you may as well do it right!

This is a superb way to spend a Sunday afternoon: kick back, listen to the tunes, read all about Jay Z's 99 problems on the wall, look at the view, people-watch and just revel in the roast and the drinks. Thanks Lock Stock, we'll be back.
