During the Holy Month of Ramadan, followers of the Islamic faith fast during daylight hours. The breaking of the fast at iftar and sharing of food is a huge part of the Ramadan tradition. Even for those of us who aren't fasting, it's a time when to get together with friends and family to enjoy the spirit of Ramadan and engage with the food culture that surrounds it. For many, it's the only time of year we get to enjoy traditional Ramadan dishes such as lamb ouzi, shorba (lentil soup), haleem, sumptuous kebabs and exotic Ramadan sweets.
What customs should you observe when attending a public iftar meal? There aren't too many! The cannon will go off at locations around the city when the sun goes down and this will often be televised at venues or watched live. At this point, you may take your first sip of water or laban and start your meal with dates and dried fruit. Once the fast has been broken, you may see people leaving the venue to go to pray though many will do this afterwards, so be sure to let these people approach the buffet first. What to wear? Iftar isn't a dressy affair but you'll feel more comfortable if your knees and shoulders are covered.
